Radiator Faults We Repair
Common radiator problems we diagnose and fix.
Radiator Leaking Water
Water leaking from a radiator valve, the valve connection to the radiator or the radiator body itself. A leaking radiator causes water damage and pressure loss in sealed systems. We trace and fix the leak.
Cold at the Bottom
The radiator is warm at the top but cold along the bottom. This is sludge and debris settled in the bottom of the radiator blocking the flow of hot water. Bleeding will not fix this — it needs flushing or replacement.
Cold at the Top
The radiator is warm at the bottom but cold at the top. Usually caused by trapped air in the radiator. Bleeding the radiator releases the air and restores full heat. We check for underlying causes if it keeps recurring.
Radiator Not Heating at All
A completely cold radiator while others work. Could be air, a stuck thermostatic radiator valve, a closed lockshield valve or a balancing issue. We diagnose the cause and restore heat to the radiator.
Leaking Radiator Valve
Water seeping from the radiator valve spindle or the compression joint where the valve meets the pipe. We can tighten, repack or replace the faulty valve to stop the leak.
Corroded Radiator Body
Rust spots, bubbling paint or pinhole leaks on the radiator body indicate internal corrosion. The radiator usually needs replacing. We can supply and fit a matching new radiator.

Radiator Repair FAQs
Common questions about radiator repairs
Why is my radiator cold at the bottom but warm at the top?
This is almost always sludge and debris settled at the bottom of the radiator. Bleeding will not fix it. The radiator needs flushing to clear the sludge or replacing if the sludge is too heavy. We can diagnose and advise.
How do I fix a leaking radiator valve?
Sometimes tightening the gland nut on the valve stops the leak. If the leak is from the compression joint to the pipe it may need tightening or the olive replacing. If the valve body is cracked it needs replacing. We can repair or replace leaking valves.
Why does one radiator stay cold while the others are hot?
First check the thermostatic radiator valve is not stuck on the off position. If the valve is open the radiator may be air locked or the lockshield valve may be closed. If that doesn't fix it the system may need balancing.
Can a leaking radiator be repaired or does it need replacing?
Leaks from valves and connections can usually be repaired. A leak from the radiator body means internal corrosion and pinholes — the radiator needs replacing. We can supply and fit a matching replacement.
How do I bleed a radiator?
Use a radiator bleed key to slowly open the bleed valve at the top of the radiator until air hisses out. When water starts to come out close the valve. Check the system pressure afterwards on sealed systems. We can do this as part of a repair visit.
Why do my radiators need bleeding so often?
Frequent bleeding is a sign of corrosion inside the system producing hydrogen gas. This often means the system needs cleaning and fresh inhibitor. We can test your system water and advise on the right treatment.
