Tap Repair FAQs

Common questions about leaking and broken taps

What should I do if a tap will not turn off?

Turn off the water supply to that tap using the isolation valve on the supply pipe. If there is no isolation valve, turn off the main stopcock. Call us for emergency tap repair.

How much water does a dripping tap waste?

A tap dripping once per second wastes about 24 litres per day or nearly 9,000 litres per year. A tap that will not turn off wastes far more and can cause flooding.

Can you repair ceramic disc taps?

Yes. Ceramic disc taps are common on modern mixers. We carry ceramic disc cartridges and can replace failed cartridges to stop drips and stiff operation.

What causes a tap to leak from the base?

Water leaking from the base of the tap is usually caused by a failed O-ring seal. When you turn the tap on, water seeps past the O-ring and emerges around the spout base.

Do you carry tap parts in the van?

Yes. Our plumbers carry common tap washers, O-rings, ceramic disc cartridges, gland packing and flexible tap connectors. Most tap repairs are completed on the first visit.

Can an outside tap freeze and burst?

Yes. Outside taps can freeze in winter and burst. We recommend fitting an isolation valve inside the property and draining the outside tap before winter.
